You’ve seen the 4×4 forum chatter, and maybe you’ve even seen Overland Journal Chairman Scott Brady’s G-Wagen adorned with them — and soon, you’ll get the straight scoop from us on one of the newest mud terrain tires on the market, the Cooper Discoverer STT Pro.
If there’s one thing you can buy for your truck for instant performance improvement – tires are it. We don’t take tire purchases lightly and we are always looking for the right balance between on-road manners, off-road performance, and price.
With the 4Runner’s Goodyear MT/Rs nearing the end of their service life, now is a great time put the new STT Pro’s through their paces in a long-term test — and Cooper has been generous enough to send us a set.
About the Cooper Discoverer STT Pro
The STT Pro is Cooper’s most aggressive off-road tire to date, with features that enhance off-road capability (a sticky silica compound, deep lugs with both siping and mud scoops, and a reinforced tire carcass), as well as design elements that make them more comfortable on the road (alternating lug pattern that apparently reduces noise and a “flex groove” to minimize harshness over road inconsistencies).
Why we are excited about the STT Pro?
Since I’ve owned the 4Runner (over 100,000 miles now), I’ve run 2 tire models — Goodyear Duratracs (previously) and Goodyear MT/Rs (currently). There are strengths and weaknesses associated with each model, and of course we’ve covered those extensively — see more on that here. On paper, the Cooper STT Pros look like they may strike that optimal balance of everyday livability with very few compromises off-road.
What to expect next?
We should have the new rubber in hand in the next few of weeks, and then we’ll share updates on everything you want/need to know — performance, of course, and our satisfaction level from the initial delivery/weighting/mounting + balancing to first impressions on the road and dirt. In the future, as we log more miles and expose the tires to more and varied terrain, we’ll share our experiences and rate our satisfaction. We have high hopes and look forward to bringing you along for the journey!

Can’t wait for the review. I’ve had my eye on these since I first saw them. I’m curious if they really behave well on the road and still maintain decent off road performance.
