We finally got a new set of FN Five Star wheels mounted up on the Jeep just in time to hit the trails in Vermont. Combine them with some 35″ rubber and you’ll go damn near anywhere.
FN is well known in Toyota circles for their Five Star wheel, so when Dustin from FN let us know that they were going to do a production run in a 5×5 lug configuration for Jeeps I knew that I had to get my hands on a set. Ben’s run these exact same wheels for a few months now, and they meet the most important criteria for wheels. They look cool.
The first thing I noticed was that these wheels are light, and it doesn’t hurt to save weight when you’re combining them with 35″ tires. They also balanced well (as well as you can balance a 35″ tire) and most importantly they look awesome.
On the trail I was initially a little worried about how well they would protect the valve stems, but these fears proved to be unfounded because the stems are pretty well recessed. Throughout the day I climbed obstacles with the tires aired down to only 15 PSI and at no point did I have an issue holding a bead. I could probably have gone lower, but I wasn’t having traction issues.
At the end of the day I noticed one of the great benefits of the Five Star’s design, it’s a pretty minimal wheel which means it doesn’t hold much mud and it’s easy to clean. They also look good with a nice coat of Vermont mud.
I’m looking forward to putting a few thousand miles on the wheels, and I’ll definitely be back with a long term review. In the meantime if you’re looking for a set of wheels for you JK, the Five Stars are a good option that stands out from your run of the mill Jeep wheels.
