With virtually everything else upgraded on the 4Runner, I’ve finally upgraded from my OEM Wheels to a brand new set of FN Wheels Five Star 17” Wheels. And what an upgrade they are!
FN Wheels has a near-cult following in the Tacoma, 4Runner, and FJ crowds, offering clean styles that combine strength, light-weight, and offsets/backspacing designed to work with late-model Toyotas and Fords (and Jeeps in the very near future).
After recently upgrading suspension components, I was looking for a little more outward spacing in wheels than the OEMs provided, and in talking to Dustin at FN, their new 17” Five Star model was a great solution for me. A couple of things I love about them:
- Light Weight: The Five Stars weigh in at about 22 lbs, which is nearly 10 lbs less than the OEMs per wheel. Reducing unsprung rotating mass by ~40 pounds is noticeable!
- Fit: The FN Five Stars feature 4.5” backspacing and a -6mm offset on an 8.5” wide rim. The wheel width combined with the backspacing and offset sets the wheels out about 1”-1.25” wider than factory Trail Edition wheels. Even with the additional track width afforded by the wheels, I am still running them with 1.25” Spidertrax spacers for comfortable clearance on all of my suspension components
- Aesthetics: I am more “clean” than “bling”, so I love the classic 5-spoke wheel design. The anthracite light gunmetal finish (black and bronze are other options) looks killer on the black 4Runner.
Dustin at FN has been great to work with and is a supporter of DirtRoadTrip – please check out FN Wheels to see all of the wheel makes/models they offer, and we’ll keep you guys updated as FN comes out with new stuff in the upcoming months!

Just curious how much did the stock rims weigh.
Ben says
About 30 lbs – but I’ll confirm with a scale when we get back from our Trip out West

Hey Ben, met you a few days ago at at traffic light. I was in the 40th LC80, your rigs looks awesome with those wheels! Been looking at FN for a bit now…..might be time to pull the trigger
Ben says
It was great to meet you! Your cruiser is the cream of the crop – the coveted 97 Special Edition! I’m very happy with the wheels.
Pike says
Did you NEED to keep the spacer’s ? Do you have UCA rubbing without?
Ben says
There is no need for people to run a spacer with these wheels. The offset of the wheels actually provides more UCA clearance than the factory wheels. The only reason I kept the spacer is the clear my secondary bypass shocks mounted to the Total Chaos Race Lower Control Arms. Those specific lower control arms, because of how they’re built, require at least 1.25″ outward spacing.
Pike says
Good to go…thanks!
Eric says
That has to be the best looking wheel for the 5th gen!
Ben says
Eric, looks like we’ve got the same taste in wheels, couldn’t agree more!
