For 2015 my fiance and I decided that we wanted to spend more time exploring local areas around Washington, DC, and the only way to really hit the dirt in the area is to put on some hiking boots.
We’ve passed Sugarloaf Mountain dozens of times while on our way up and down interstate 270, and we can even see it from the pool deck of our condominium building on a clear day. It was really more of a surprise to both of us that we hadn’t hiked it together before.
So on a rainy Sunday afternoon we finally decided to break out our rain gear and hit the trail. It also didn’t hurt that we had 2 dogs that we needed to wear out, and nothing works better than a quick hiking trip.
We arrived at the base of the mountain and took the White Trail from the parking lot to the Blue Trail which leads to the summit. If you’re looking for a more challenging approach take the earlier fork for the Orange Trail and be ready for a workout. There are a few good overlooks along the way, and the trail is relatively flat and easy enough for beginners.
When you get to the summit give yourself some time to take in the views. It can get pretty crowded up there when the weather is good, but if you go when it’s raining you’ll almost have the place to yourself.
Heading down we took the Red Trail which merges with the Green Trail. On this portion you’ll get to walk down (or up depending which way to go) a pretty impressive stone staircase, but it was pretty slick when we were there so watch your step!
We ended the hike with two happy dogs and a few glasses of wine at the Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard.
If you have a few hours on a weekend and are up for a short drive, Sugarloaf is a great day trip to help you escape DC.
