Fins & Things is one of those trails that seemingly everyone has heard of and is one of the “must-do” trails if you manage to get yourself and your rig to Moab, Utah. Becca and I ran Fins & Things this summer on our first day in the slickrock mecca after driving West from Telluride.
I like Fins & Things as a “warm up” trail to some more remote and punishing options in the area. The 9.3-mile route is located in the Sand Flats Recreation area, which is only ~5 mins from downtown Moab (so, should you suffer a mechanical, help is close by).
For us East Coast-based guys, Fins & Things presents an alien landscape and is filled with the slickrock terrain Moab is famous for. Traction on the slickrock is seemingly never ending, which is what makes some of the extreme approaches, departures, and ledges possible, and even “tame”. It is a fun trail to test your ground clearance, articulation, and trail navigation abilities. Predictably, the 4Runner performed very well – only in a couple of sections did the beast run out of departure angle and drag on the bumper.
