Since we’re kicking things off with a bang here at DRT HQ, I’ve compiled what has become known as “THE” official list any east coast Overland event that is worth a damn needs to be on.
How did we develop our rigorous selection criteria? We drank a few beers and decided which ones we would actually want to attend, it also helps that we’ve experienced all of them during previous years.
So, while we may not be able to attend all of the events listed below this year, here’s a good place to start planning where to spend your hard earned cash and PTO.
Wheelers Overland Adventure
When: May 17-21
Where: Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area – Coal Township, PA
What To Expect: 4 days of trail runs and off-road driving instruction at the Anthracite Outdoor Adventure Area.
Why You Should Go: This is the second year Wheelers is hosting their Overland Adventure, the first year was an absolute blast and we had a great time hanging out with Mike Kelly and the rest of the team. Anthracite offers over 6,500 acres of trails that range from mild to “what the hell did I get myself into?” and really gives you the opportunity to test out the capabilities of your rig.

Mid-Atlantic Overland Festival
When: August 9-12
Where: Henwood Family Farm – Huntingdon, PA
What To Expect: 3 days of workshops, exhibits, training, and trail riding in Bald Eagle State Forest.
Why You Should Go: Let’s be honest, anyone that’s been to this event in the past knows the real reason to go is to hang out around the fire and share a keg with Matt and Pete Henwood. If that’s not good enough for you, read the rest of the blub: The event is held in central Pennsylvania on a beautiful working farm, and is a convenient drive from all points in the Mid-Atlantic. This year they’re featuring dozens of vendors, 4wd driving instruction, a great local trail network, and it’s the best place to get your eyes on a Four Wheel Camper.

Vermont Overland Rally
When: September 27 – September 30
Where: 419 Baileys Mills Road, Reading VT 05062
What To Expect: VOR has the best trail network on the east coast along with arguably some of the best beer. There are vendors present, but the event is more a gathering of travelers and adventurers who are looking to get out and use their rigs. This isn’t a show and shine, but growing an epic mustache prior to the event is almost a requirement.
Why You Should Go: I’ve been quoted for saying “If Expo East is the SEMA of the overland industry, VOR is Burning Man.” I know the event is already sold out this year, and it continues to sell out year after year because it’s that awesome. If you’ve never been to Vermont before, make sure you buy your ticket early next year, it’s worth selling your kidney for a ticket a one of a kind experience that you’ll never forget.

Why You Should Go: The Rendezvous is a super casual atmosphere where you’ll get a chance to hit the trails and sample some amazing food at the world famous potluck. It’s a family friendly event with great people, good stories, and awesome rigs. Be sure to check out the kissing booth at North American Expeditions and to get a free hug from Dave AKA TacoDoc. Best highlight of this event is the potluck and late nights around the campfire.

Overland Expo East
When: November 9-11
Where: Reeb Ranch – Asheville, NC
What To Expect: 3 days of lectures, classes, an official Land Rover driving event, and every piece of “Overland” equipment you’ve ever seen, wanted to see, or drooled over on the internet.
Why You Should Go: Expo East is the SEMA of the overlanding world, it’s a place where you’ll get to put your hands on every piece of equipment you’ve ever imagined and the classes are taught by some of the most experienced people in the industry. If there’s a piece of gear you’ve seen on the internet that you actually want to see for yourself, chances are this is the place to do it.
