The 4×4 community (read: those of us that not only build trucks but also get out on the trail) is not a huge group. After a while, you’re bound to know 90% of people whose tires see the dirt in the Mid-Atlantic/Northeast by two degrees of separation.
Because of that, things hit a little closer to home when something bad happens to someone in our community. While I don’t know Charlie (Charles John Williams) personally, I’ve seen/followed his adventures in the Northeast, including building his 3rd gen 4Runner, breaking things, fixing things, running VOT, fishing, camping, and doing all the stuff we love to do.
On August 12, Charlie had a sudden heart/respiratory medical event that sent him into cardiac arrest and he has been in a medically-induced coma since then. While his CT scans and MRIs are coming back normal, Charlie is experiencing seizures and is not in a place yet to be fully brought out of coma due to the meds he’s on to manage the seizures.
As I’ve seen the updates on Facebook I keep thinking that a sudden event like this could happen to any of us and we’re fortunate for every day we get, whether it is a regular weekday at work or an epic trail day in the mountains.
As you can imagine, Charlie’s hospital stay is racking up quite the bill. To help offset medical expenses, some of Charlie’s friends in the 4×4 community have organized “Trails for Charlie”, a day for trail riding at Rausch Creek Off-Road Park on Saturday, October 24 to help raise money for Charlie’s care. Not only will you be helping someone in need – you’ll have a lot of fun doing it. Located in central PA, Rausch Creek is a unique Northeast venue to test your gear and your skill on a variety of terrain, and you’re sure to make some new friends while you’re there. The event is open to all, so consider attending!
If you can’t attend yet feel compelled to help, there is also GoFundMe account set up for Charlie. Here’s the Link.
We don’t normally post these kinds of things nor ask people to part with their time or money, but we do think its important to help our fellow 4x4ers who are in need. Wake up soon, Charlie!
