Like just about everyone else we know, we treat our furry four-legged friends like family and bring them as often as we can on our adventures! This post is all about the 2 spoiled dogs that you’ve probably seen us feature in pictures and writeups before.
Pooch #1: Ben and Becca’s Dog Huckleberry (The Instigator)
Huckleberry is the ‘alpha male’ Boston Terrier / French Bulldog mix that can often be found running laps around the 4Runner or terrorizing (pestering) other dogs. Huckleberry lives about 90% of his life relaxing on the couch and chooses to use all that stored up energy in short bursts, typically asserting his alpha status on larger dogs that usually ignore him (poor Huck! – hence the name the instigator). He’s even been known to charge (and spook) a horse – not his finest moment and pretty embarrassing for his parents. Definitely a case of the “Napoleon syndrome”…
Huckleberry Showing his Authority…
Huck comes on just about every camping trip with us and even did the trip up to Maine for a week in the outdoors. He’s a nice small “packable” dog, so thankfully when he gets filthy in the great outdoors he can only partially trash the interior of the truck. At the campsite, he’s happiest wrapped in a blanket (with a few sets of handwarmers in there) sitting in his own chair by the fire – his short fur doesn’t stand up well to the cold. He snores so loud when he sleeps you can sometimes hear him over the roar of a campfire!
Exploring Acadia Summer of 2011
The 411 on Huckleberry:
Age: 3.5 years
Height: ~10” at the shoulder
Weight: 19 pounds
Best Trick: climbing barstools (to inhale 2 Dunkin donuts on the kitchen counter)
Likes: cheese, donuts (apparently), warm blankets, car rides, direct sunlight, belly rubs
Dislikes: small children, rain, vacuum cleaners
Mods: the “snip”
Pooch #2: Alex and Maria’s Dog Coco (The Wrecking Ball)
Coco is an American Staffordshire Terrier rescue mutt that to this day is the best impulse decision that we’ve ever made. When she’s not out traveling with us on the trails, you can usually find her cuddled up in bed under her heated blanket. She loves nothing more than to run around the campsite (usually chasing Huck) and has a tendency to crash into things and knock them down (including people).
In Her Natural Enviornment:
Fortunately for us Coco is a medium sized dog so she’s easy to bring along for trips, although by no means does she like to travel light. Half of my cargo area is usually taken up by her bed, and the other is occupied by our fridge. You can always find her tagging along with us on all of our trips both on and off pavement from the Florida Keys to rural West Virginia. Her only downfall is the lack of a thick coat, so we’re forced to supplement that with some polar fleece when the weather gets brisk.
The 411 on Coco:
Age: 3.5 years
Height: 21” at the shoulder
Ground Clearance: 13″
Weight: 50 pounds
Best Trick: Clearing 5 ft walls and fences
Likes: Sleeping in, sitting on your feet and getting a back scratch, yummy chummies, cat naps in the sun
Dislikes: Being mounted, pedicures, cold weather, Land Rovers
Mods: Ruff Wear Polar Fleece Coat
The Misadventures of Huckleberry and Coco:
Needless to say traveling off the beaten path without our loyal canine companions wouldn’t be the same, they’re an essential part of our family and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
