Our recent cross-country trip was chock-full of adventure in the great outdoors, but in between hikes, 4×4 trails, and camping, we ate like Kings. We made it a point to research and check out unique spots throughout our trip in the small towns we passed through, and they did not disappoint! If you’re doing a similar trip, you owe it to yourself to check these places out!
Versailles, KY – Wallace Station Deli: We found this great place using the Food Network’s directory of featured restaurants, and since it is only a couple of miles off the interstate West of Lexington, Kentucky, we stopped in for lunch on the way out to Colorado, and again on the way back! Wallace Station makes their bread in-house and puts together some awesome sandwiches – we recommend the “Inside Out Hot Brown” and the “East Hampton Hot Ham and Brie”. Just as good as the food is the scenery you pass through to get to the deli – beautiful horse farms on country 2-lane roads.
Denver, CO – Jax Fish House: This place has a pretty kickin happy hour with quality food and drink. Jax is built around a large central bar and feels pretty hip without trying too hard. From the happy hour menu, we tried (and loved) the raw oysters, calamari, and “sea dog”.
Ouray, CO – The Outlaw: The Outlaw has a classic western, kindof rowdy vibe (it is the Outlaw, after all) that you should check out at least once. We didn’t have dinner there, but instead enjoyed drinks at the bar and a tasty shrimp appetizer. While we were there, the bar was taken over by (friendly) participants in the Colorado 500 Motorcycle Race. The highlight was one of the fellas driving his KTM dualsport into. the. bar.
Ouray, CO – Mouse’s Chocolates: Mouse’s is a place I look forward to going every time I’m in Ouray. Get yourself a scrap cookie and a dreamsicle milkshake and be temporarily transported to heaven.
Telluride, CO – Brown Dog Pizza: Located right on the main drag, this place claims the have the “world’s best pizza”. We were skeptical, but also had a friend recommend Brown Dog. We had their award-winning “Brooklyn Bridge” pizza, and it was an incredibly good “Detroit -style” square pizza.
Telluride, CO – Cindy Bread: Several Telluride locals recommend Cindy Bread as a great breakfast spot on our way out of town. Cindy Bread, as you might guess, makes their bread and pastries in-house, and they are delicious. Becca and I loved the breakfast sandwiches at this little spot but couldn’t resist picking up some scones and cookies top take on the road with us as well.
Moab, UT – Love Muffin Cafe: I think this was Becca’s favorite meal of the trip. After a night of camping that included a stint spent in the truck waiting out some lightning and inconsiderate camping neighbors, the waffles and chai lattes at Love Muffin hit the spot.
