The plus side to buying quality gear and equipment is that it can often be bought second hand at large discounts while still in excellent condition. This was the case with my new-to-me Yeti Cooler. I had always admired the toughness and insulating properties of these units, but the price tag was just not practical and/or justifiable for my needs.
I happened to stumble across an ad for a used 50 quart Yeti on Expedition Portal with an asking price of over 50% off the new MSRP of $379.99; I had to have it! Two days later I was the proud owner of one serious cooler (in some bold colors…). While I don’t know the details of the Yeti’s previous life it’s easy to say this cooler had seen an adventure or 5. The Yeti wears it scars proudly, but due to its rugged roto-molded polyethylene construction it still functions and looks great.
In the short time I have had the Yeti it has exceeded my ice keeping expectations on every trip (will hold ice for days). From pulling beer duty on beach days to extended weekend food storage this cooler has upheld its hype.
The ups:
– durable, grizzly-proof, virtually un-breakable
– size: 50qt is about the smallest I’d go for weekend trips when storing food and drinks
– basket for storing dry items
– lockable ( keeping friends from pilfering your adult beverages)
The downs:
– Weight: this thing clocks in at about 30lbs dry. 50 quarts of Ice and…beverages and this thing is a heavy SOB! Not the cooler you want to be toting long distances.
