Just because you’re out camping doesn’t mean you have to give up all the luxuries of home, NEMO’s Fillo is the perfect addition to any overland or backpacking sleep setup.
Coming from a backpacking background, I initially always wrote off pillows as luxury items that weren’t needed on camping trips. I always thought they were bulky, unwieldy, and added excess weight that I didn’t need on my rig. Then I became more involved in overlanding and decided that if I was already bringing the kitchen sink, I might has well bring the master bedroom along also.
NEMO’s Luxury Fillo is an air pillow with a memory foam top that fits into a micro suede cover that is easily removed for when you want to throw it in the laundry (after a long night of drooling all over it). It weighs in at an ultralight 14 ounces, and packs down into an integrated stuff sack.
When deployed, it measures 11″ x 20″ and will easily accommodate the largest of heads. Two people can even share one in a pinch, but they’re so light you might as well pack two (unless you’re trying to get close to your lady friend).
It takes about five deep breaths to inflate to full capacity, but I prefer to let some air out to reduce the overall stiffness. Another tip is that if you’re flying with one of these, you don’t even need to inflate it, the memory foam does a great job on it’s own.
Once you’re done you’re set for a great night of sleep, and these pillows are almost as good as the ones you have at home. In regards to durability I’ve owned both of ours for over a year without any issues and we’ve had some moments where we swore they would fail (a 300 pound guy accidentally sat on one and it maintained it’s structural integrity, don’t try this at home). So stop slumming it in the field without a pillow, you’re an overlander not a neanderthal.

You mean I don;t have to put my dirty cloths in my sleeping bag stuff sack and use that as my pillow? Cool, I’ll have to look into getting one.

It works but then you get to smell them for the rest of the night. I even drag this thing out backpacking now since it’s so small and light.
